Prospect Watch - Weekend Starting 10/2/11 - Review

York Hall is where my Boxing weekend started and it was great to see Kevin Mitchell return to the ring with a 10 round points win over Felix Lora, with the performance very reminiscent of the one against Breidis Prescott, in which he used his skills to stay out of danger and towards the end he could have easily stopped the Barcelona based Dominican.

Buglioni threw everything at Clark
I was looking forward to seeing Frank Buglioni (now 3-0, 2 KO's) on the undercard and he started his fight with tough Lincoln man Ryan Clark very well, throwing hurtful combinations, which looked to be having a serious effect on his opponent. However credit to Clark who come back in the last two rounds and landed some decent counter shots on Buglioni. Referee Robert Williams had it 40-36 to Buglioni, and for me it was a great learning fight for him as he really needed the rounds after first round stoppages. The 22 year old is now scheduled to fight on the big Wembley bill on March 16th, where I will look forward to tracking the progress of this very talented super middleweight.

Saunders v Nesbitt ended controversially
2007 World Amateur Bronze medallist Bradley Saunders (now 1-0, 1 KO) kicked off his pro career with a third round stoppage of the tough Jason Nesbitt. It was a controversial stoppage as watching it Nesbitt didn't look to be in great danger, however Saunders was well on top and might just have got him out of there in the next couple of rounds. What was very eye catching about this debut was that the fight was scheduled for six rounds, very unusual for a pro making his debut, which indicates the quality Saunders has. North East Boxing is relatively quiet at the moment, it did start to motor along with Tony Jeffries selling out shows, but he's not fought regular enough and promoters have concentrated on other areas. Saunders could be a great ticket seller for Frank Warren though, he brought around 200 fans down with him to York Hall and more will follow if he continues with these impressive displays.

Lozano totally outclassed Galaviz
In Tampa, Florida, flyweight Daniel Lozano (now 11-0, 8 KO's) smashed his opponent Manuel Galaviz in a round, putting him down twice with some very hurtful body shots. For me it was a step back for Lozano after a good showing last time out, but really you can never blame prospects in these type of fighters, they have to beat what's put in front of them and doing so with a first round KO doesn't get any better really. "El Alacran" has now stopped his last three opponents and looks to be heading the right way after some shaky displays in late 2010 and early 2011.

Wolverhampton was the place to be on Saturday night with Prizefighter light welterweights, but it was one of the Prizefighter Prospects who stole the headlines, that being Dudley man Ryan Aston (now 5-0, 2 KO's). Like Lozano who I've just talked about, Aston stopped his opponent Keiron Gray in a round, with a body shot getting the job done. Gray had just come out of retirement and it's unsure how much he really wanted to box again, but he'd never been stopped in nine previous fights and had taken some decent fighters the distance. Aston seems to be getting better and better, and like I said in the original post, the fact he's now signed with Matchroom will help him considerably. The 20 year old is expected to fight in Sheffield on March 17th against Lee Noble.

Someone's 0 had to go in the quarters
Finally I had two guys who were in the Prizefighter competition and as it turns out, one of them won, although not the one I expected. I tipped Alfreton fighter Dale Miles (now 12-1, 9 KO's) to go close, but he was knocked out in the quarter finals, having to retire in the final round of his clash with fellow unbeaten fighter Tyrone Nurse, with a bad cut above the right eye. Miles always had a tough competition in front of him as he was a good couple of pounds the lightest fighter in the competition, and the fight with Nurse didn't really suit his style. The 27 year old has had a mere 13 fights though and deserves another shot, Prizefighter doesn't always suit everyone.

Anwar took the trophy
The winner was Leeds fighter Adil Anwar (now 16-1, 7 KO's) who came through a very hard draw, winning his fights with Barry Morrison, John Watson and Nurse in the final on unanimous decision's. "The Platinum Kid" looked very strong at the weight and displayed some considerable Boxing talent in all of his bouts. I don't think he won too many admirers to be fair, his style isn't the greatest to watch, but technically he's a very sound fighter. He will target British champ Ashley Theophane now, but for me that stylistically is a very bad fight for the public, they'll cancel each other out and it could be an extremely ugly bout.

So those were the guys I featured in my original Prospect Watch post, and to be honest there's not much to add from this weekend, one fighter took my eye, but bar that not much happened on the undercards.

Welterweight Skeet outclassed the game Komjathi
Well back at York Hall on Friday night and a fighter I know pretty well, Bradley "Super" Skeete (now 6-0, 2 KO's) was in action against the very experienced Hungarian Laszlo Komjathi and cruised to an 80-71 points win. Watching it on BoxNation, Enzo Maccarinelli was being slightly harsh on SkeeteSkeete stuck to his gameplan and used his technical skills to make it a very easy night's work. I've said on Twitter already that some of the things he was doing were Mayweather-esque, and I'm not in anyway saying Skeete is like Floyd, but the way he uses his skills is great to watch if you're a purist. Entertainment wise he's no Frank Buglioni, but he sticks to his strengths and is going along at a good pace. This fight was made at a few days notice, so any criticism of Skeete I would deem harsh.

Next week is a huge weekend of Boxing, next week's Prospect Watch will be stacked and you definitely need to come back around Thursday or Friday to have a look at different features hyping up the fights, which includes Vitali v Del Boy in Munich.
